THE VISIT

If you have read through some of the FAQ's on this site, you probably have a good idea of what you want and what questions to ask the agent when he comes for a visit. The agent should do these things for you.

  • Describe health insurance business in general.
  • Describe what is covered in his health plans.
  • Describe the strengths and weaknesses of his plans.
  • Show the premiums for the plans.
  • Do a cost analysis of your health care for you.

STATEMENT - I've never met with an agent about health insurance before, what should I expect?

ANSWER - To save both you and him time, keep on topic and allow at least an hour; more if the agent is a broker for several companies. If you are really serious about health insurance and getting the best plan you may want to allow two to three hours. You are going to be spending several thousands of dollars per year; surely you can spend two or three hours going over the plan. People generally spend more time researching the purchase of a computer than they do researching health insurance. Even though the computer may be more fun, we have never heard of a computer causing a bankruptcy. However, people do declare bankruptcy for medical bills. 50.35% of personal bankruptcies were caused by illness or medical debts. 68% of debtors that had medical bankruptcies also had health insurance, just not the right kind.

Please keep the appointment, if you must cancel have the courtesy to call him.

Make sure your spouse is present. If your spouse is not there I guarantee that they will think of a question to ask that you didn't because both of you see this differently. Be frank and honest with your questions and don't beat around the bush.

Prepare a space to talk. Make sure you're not going to be distracted by the kids or something; you can't afford to miss any information.

If you like the plan and are satisfied that all of your questions have been answered, be prepared to fill the application out right then and there. Don't be pushed into it but if it's right, do it!

"We need to think about this" is what most people will say. If you need to think about it you aren't sure, and if you aren't sure the agent hasn't answered all of your questions properly. Ask your questions until you completely understand everything because the answers are not going to suddenly come to you later that day.

Many people are comfortable with doing this over the phone. It makes it easier for both you and the agent so don't hesitate to try.

Please go on to the application page.
